IHE Delft continues the work that was started in 1957 when a postgraduate diploma course in hydraulic engineering was first offered to practicing professionals from developing countries. In 1976 the name International Institute for Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering (IHE) was introduced.
IHE Delft offers a wide variety of educational courses in the field of water. In addition to four MSc Programmes and the PhD Programme, the Institute also offers a range of short and online courses tailored to specific needs.
IHE Delft centres its education, research and capacity development programmes on the focal themes of: Safe Drinking Water & Sanitation, Water-Related Hazards & Climate Change, Water & Ecosystems Quality, Water Management & Governance, Water, Food & Energy Security and Information & Knowledge Systems. In addition, important emerging areas are addressed in the education and research programmes, such as water conflict management, climate and global change adaptation, and urban water systems.
Graduates start or resume a career dealing with water and sanitation services, managing the urban water cycle, water policy and planning, environmental regulation or civil engineering design and construction in the water sector or related sectors such as infrastructure, energy, agriculture or mining. Careers include working at public administration, private sector, academia and research institutes and NGOs and international organizations.
IHE Delft provides fully furnished accommodation in Delft for all students of the Institutes programmes, available upon arrival and for the duration of the study period.
IHEs campus is located in the centre of Delft. The premises, comprising three interconnected buildings, cover an area of 14,000 square metres, extending from the main entrance of the new building on Westvest 7, to the historic buildings along one of Delfts main canals.
All IHE Delft students have free access to the sports facilities of the Delft University of Technology at practice hours of the Institute's football, volleyball, basketball, badminton or table tennis teams.
The Student Association Board (SAB) represents the Institutes MSc students in all IHE Delft-related matters, and discusses views and suggestions on course matters and student welfare with IHE Delft management.The mandate of the PhD Association Board (PAB) is to represent the PhD community and to facilitate cooperation with the supervisory teams, IHE Delft management, and outside parties. It is also to be a voice on issues important to the academic and overall well-being of PhD fellows.
IHE Delft degrees are awarded to participants who have successfully completed an MSc programme. These degrees are accredited by the Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Organisation (NVAO) and are internationally recognized as university-level Masters' degrees. The Institute complies fully with the quality control procedures of the Netherlands Ministry of Education. All levels of the Netherlands education system are geared to achieving a creative, independent and internationally focused workforce. This higher education system has an excellent international reputation. Foreign nationals who obtain part of their higher education in the Netherlands are well equipped to perform their functions anywhere in the world.
