Durham became one of England's leading centres of medieval scholarship, along with Oxford and Cambridge. Indeed, three Colleges - now part of Oxford University - were founded from Durham (University College and Balliol College, and in 1286 Durham College was run from Durham to train scholars for Durham for 300 years until it became incorporated into the University of Oxford as Trinity College).

Offering over 200 undergraduate and 130 taught postgraduate courses, and many research programmes.

Durham University has an extensive range of state-of-the-art research equipment and facilities across a range of disciplines including:

  • Anthropology
  • Archaeology
  • Biological Sciences
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Earth Sciences
  • Engineering
  • Geography
  • Health
  • Physics
  • Psychology, and
  • Medicine.

Our analytical equipment and facilities are primarily used to support university-based research at national and international level, but we do allow access to these facilities more widely.

Durham alumni make an enormous contribution to enriching the University as a whole, and we're always keen to find new opportunities for alumni who wish to ‘give back’ to their College or Department, in non-financial ways. Volunteering your time to offer careers information and advice to students is one such way you could get involved. In particular, you could help by:

  • Sharing your experience of the workplace
  • Offering an insight into career pathways and development opportunities
  • Advising on what works in CVs and applications
  • Talking about sector-specific recruitment processes
  • Giving an insider’s view of a particular industry
  • Sharing your experiences of business start-ups

Student services

The Durham University Student Welcome Guide is designed to provide an introduction to the basics of University life, and to act as a resource for any problems or queries you may have.

We recognise that coming to study in the UK can be challenging for international students. Our dedicated team of Immigration Advisers can offer visa and immigration advice before and during your studies.

We also offer our new international students a warm welcome through our Meet and Greet service and comprehensive Induction programme, which includes a range of information and social events to help you meet other students and become accustomed to life at Durham University.

Housing services

Most undergraduate students live in college accommodation their first year, and then can chose to live in or find private accommodation in subsequent years. Approximately two-thirds of postgraduate students live in private accommodation.

Durham City and Stockton both have a variety of flats, houses and rooms in owners' homes spread across the city and nearby villages. There is no shortage of accommodation in the area so there is no need to panic about not finding anywhere to live and we would strongly advise you to take your time to find accommodation and not rush in to anything.

Library services

Durham University Library and Heritage Collections provide an excellent range of collections, resources, and flexible study spaces across five library locations and online. The University Library is always busy; about 3.2 million e-journal downloads, around 3.15 million e-book accesses, and over 693,000 borrowing and renewals transactions were made during the 2014-2015 academic year.

Medical services

Health and safety is managed by applying a mixture of central and local guidance. The University Health and Safety Service sets out generic arrangements for managing health and safety which are implemented locally by each Department and College. Departments and Colleges supplement this by adding their own specific arrangements to ensure that risks are fully controlled.
