About

History

The University of Dundee was founded in 1881 and became a college of St Andrews University in 1897. In 1967, we became independent once again and celebrated 50 years as an independent university in 2017.

We are listed in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2017 - the world's best 200 universities aged 50 years or under. Dundee is the only UK university ranked in the top 50.

Education

We pride ourselves on offering a wide range of degree subjects at Dundee. In fact, you can choose from more than 220 undergraduate degree programmes. We are also one of the few places to offer the highly-respected Scottish Master of Arts (MA) degree which allows you to ‘pick and mix’ your modules across varied subject areas.

According to the Guardian University Guide 2018, we are top in the UK for Dentistry and Design & Crafts. They also rank us in the top 10 in the UK for Fashion & Textiles, Medicine, Social Work, Business, Management & Marketing, Law and Forensic Sciences. As you can see, we are highly rated across the board and you can find out more about specific course pages on our website.

Research

Research at Dundee has been ranked among the very best in the UK in the latest Research Excellence Framework (2014). Over 30% of our funding comes from research and this helps us to produce world-changing solutions for health, the environment and the economy.

We are also ranked among the top 25 most innovative universities in Europe, and first in Scotland, in the ranking produced by Reuters. Reuters say their list of Europe's 100 most innovative universities 'identifies the educational institutions that are doing the most to advance science, invent new technologies, and help drive the global economy.' Dundee is ranked 21st in the 2017 edition of the list, and is 5th in the UK.

Career

We consistently have some of the best levels of graduate employment. In fact, 95.8% of our latest graduates were employed or in further study when surveyed six months after graduation. Our Careers Service offers you opportunities to enhance your employability through internships, work experience placements and CV writing clinics. Furthermore, our Centre of Entrepreneurship is run by students, overseen by staff and gives you the opportunity to develop your entrepreneurial skills. Learning a language and studying abroad are also great ways of boosting your employability. You can combine one or two languages from French, German or Spanish with many of our degrees, or take evening classes in 15 different languages.

Super fast WiFi is available throughout campus. Furthermore, Help4U, our Service Desk, provides IT support and advice by phone, in person and online from 10am to 10pm every day.

Medical services

In the UK, you are covered by the National Health Service and the University Health Service provides a range of health related advice and services for staff and students. NHS treatment and prescription drugs are free. However you need to pay for dental and optical treatment (unless you are under 19 years old).

Student Life

Campus life

Our accommodation, library, teaching areas, students’ union and gym are all right next to each other. The city campus is in Dundee's West End, and you’ll find quirky bars, contemporary restaurants, cool cafés and independent shops nearby as well as the major cultural centres of Dundee Contemporary Arts and the Dundee Rep Theatre.

You’ll be a short walk from our two big shopping centres and a casual stroll away from both the train and bus stations. You’ll also find that your money will go a lot further around here. Our students pay well below the national average for rent, and weekly expenditure on going out is also lower than average.

Sports facilities

Our sporting facilities are highly rated and were picked as a pre-Olympic training venue. On campus there is a huge state-of-the-art-gym with personal training room; two exercise studios; three glass-backed, competition standard squash courts; a designated strength performance centre; a specialised dance/indoor cycling studio; a 25m swimming pool with sauna; four floodlit, all-weather tennis courts; and two large indoor sports halls. Our sports grounds are nearby and offer football, rugby and hockey pitches. Dundee University Sports Union has over 40 clubs and works to ensure all your sporting wants and needs are met. If there isn’t already a club for your sport, speak to them and they’ll help you set one up.

Student clubs

Our students association, DUSA, is award winning and right in the heart of campus. DUSA has three eating places and a nightclub with well over 1000 capacity. They host weekly favourites such as Skint, the club night that gives you chart hits and student anthems every Tuesday night. You can also become a member of one of DUSA’s many societies started by students for students. Why not take part and become a member of a sports club or get involved in student media or representation? There’s over 100 societies and they cover an exhaustive list of activities and interests.
