The Hybrid-Electric Vehicle – Power Electronics & Electric Machines course will introduce students to operating principles and fundamental parameters of electrical and electromechanical power conversion systems suitable for electric and hybrid vehicles.


Purdue NExT courses are taken fully online. They are self-paced, and incorporate multiple forms of media typically. Most are part of a series, but each can be taken as a stand-alone course. Learners will view short pre-recorded instruction videos, participate in interactive learning activities for application, have the ability to engage with faculty and peers in courses and check application of skills developed through assignments and quizzes.

Students will Learn:

  • About static and dynamic (switching) characteristics and device ratings for Diode, MOSFET and IGBT devices
  • To characterize steady state relationships between input and output voltages and currents and quantify losses/efficiency for DC-DC converters and six-step inverter
  • To characterize steady state and dynamic relationships between input and output voltages and currents of two-winding transformer and to quantify losses/efficiency for magnetics
  • About fundamental operating principles, device parameters and operating limitations utilizing equivalent circuits of each device for electromechanical energy conversion and to quantify losses/efficiency
