Originally known as Newcastle Polytechnic, the University was formed in 1969 from the amalgamation of three regional colleges: Rutherford College of Technology, the College of Art & Industrial Design, and the Municipal College of Commerce. By the year 2000 Northumbria University was the largest university in the North East of England.

Our sports centres offer fantastic opportunities for people at every level of fitness. We have fitness centres, a sprint track, squash courts, a six-lane 25m swimming pool and numerous outdoor pitches. At our flagship Sport Central facility the main arena can cater for up to 3,000 people and is home to the Newcastle Eagles, the most successful team in the British Basketball League.
The Students’ Union offers a great social scene at the heart of our City Campus. The Union building features three award-winning bars and it’s the venue for some of the biggest club nights and gigs in Newcastle.There are a huge range of clubs and societies that you can join.
