About

History

The Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey was founded in 1955 as the Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies by foreign language instructor Gaspard Weiss, in collaboration with his wife Louise Weiss and co-founders Frank Elton and Sybil Fearnley.

The Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey offers graduate programs that prepare professionals to provide leadership in cross-cultural, multilingual environments. Practical skills, collaborative processes, and innovative approaches are defining features of a Middlebury Institute education. Medical services

Due to the experiential nature of our academic programs and for your personal health and wellbeing, we require all students enrolled in 6 or more credit hours during the fall/spring terms or 4 or more credit hours during the summer term to have health insurance. To meet the MIIS health insurance requirement, you must either:

Campus life

  • Meet our students and faculty by visiting our campus in Monterey, California.
  • We are located in downtown Monterey, just blocks away from historic Fisherman's Wharf. The Institute campus consists of 18 buildings, some of which are listed on the Monterey historical register.
  • Choose to schedule a campus visit or attend Preview Days: Campus visits are available for individuals and small groups.
  • Your visit includes a tour led by a current student followed by a meeting with an enrollment adviser. During the academic year, you may also observe a class of your choice.
