About

History

At first, they created the Educational Foundation for the Apparel Industries to promote education for the industry. The Foundation then obtained a charter from the New York State Board of Regents to establish a “fashion institute of technology and design.” The institute opened in 1944 with 100 students, and was located on the top two floors of the High School of Needle Trades.

Whether you're just beginning your college education or seeking an advanced degree, our academic programs prepare you for a career in more than 30 fields leading to Associates, Bachelor's, and Master's degrees.

Starting your very first day at FIT you will be learning about your chosen field. Each program combines the practical and the theoretical, giving you hands-on learning that will create a seamless transfer to the professional world. Our faculty members are not only nationally and internationally recognized for contributions in their fields, they're engaging teachers dedicated to their students.

Research

The Research Services Desk is located on the 5th floor and is staffed by Library faculty and/or Reference Assistants. We

  • assist library users in finding materials and offer guidance for in-depth research projects
  • answer reference questions in-person, online or by phone
  • assist in the use of StyleCat (the Library catalog), our databases and other online resources, periodical indexes, books and other printed material
  • locate books and periodicals that are not in our collections and refer patrons to other libraries
  • assist faculty, upon request, by reviewing research assignments in advance for appropriate, accurate references to library resources

Services

Student services

Each year, hundreds of students come to the FIT Counseling Center for assistance with personal and academic concerns. There is no problem that is too silly.  In fact, we encourage students to contact us when concerns are beginning to emerge, as problems left untreated or unresolved can become much larger and affect your personal and academic well-being.

Our services are free to all registered, degree-seeking students and are private and confidential. Faculty, staff, parents and student groups are also invited to use the Counseling Center's consultation services and educational resources.

Housing services

Four on-campus residence halls house approximately 1,100 new/entering students on 27th Street and 1,100 current/returning students at 31st Street's Kaufman Hall. Kaufman Hall also serves as home to our summer housing program for visiting interns.

Library services

FIT's Library supports the academic and research needs of the FIT community. A well-selected collection of more than 175,000 volumes of print materials (and over 300,000 combined print, non-print, and electronic) supports the instructional programs in art and design, business and technology, liberal arts and our Graduate School. 

Medical services

The Health Services provides general medical and gynecological care, and carries a limited supply of medications free of charge to full-time students. Comprehensive lab tests needed for diagnostic purposes are performed on site by Quest and Labcorp. Any time you are ill, or have questions concerning your health, we are here to help you.

Campus life

FIT is a great place to learn, and a great place to live. Our campus provides students with an exciting and rewarding college experience in the heart of New York City. Whether you're living in a residence hall or commuting, you'll find everything you need. 

The FIT campus is home to a creative community with diverse interests, talents, and backgrounds. With four residence halls, two fitness centers, an intercollegiate athletics program, more than 60 clubs, and hundreds of on-campus activities, you'll find a wide range of resources for study, exploration, and fun. You'll gain new perspectives and opportunities you never imagined, and be immersed in a vibrant urban experience as rich as you want it to be.

Sports facilities

FIT has intercollegiate teams in tennis, cross-country, half-marathon, track and field, dance, swimming, women's volleyball, women's soccer, and table tennis. Participation in athletics provides training for life and FIT student athletes strive toward excellence within the classroom and within intercollegiate competition. FIT teams compete against other schools in Region XV of the National Junior College Athletic Association.
